In one of South Africa’s largest drug busts ever police confiscated 143kg of cocaine with a street value of R50-million at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday.
The drugs were hidden in 147 hair products bottles and were found during a routine inspection at the cargo section on Friday morning.
The consignment arrived from Brazil and information displayed on the cargo indicated it was in transit to Cotonou, Benin in West Africa, the police said in a statement.
National Commissioner of the Police, General Riah Phiyega said although the culprits weren’t apprehended, the discovery showed that the major ports of entry in the country were being policed by committed officials.
SAPS spokesperson, Vishnu Naidoo, says the police are investing the destination of the drugs.
