The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested 10 members of the Tembisa Tactical Response Team (TRT) for the alleged torture and murder of a man in Ivory Park. They are expected to apply for bail at the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court today.
The police officers were arrested while on duty at the Tembisa SAPS on Thursday.
The IPID media liaison officer, Ms Grace Langa, said the officers were arrested for the alleged torture and murder of Mr Khuthazile Mbedu.
“The man was arrested in connection with theft. While on their way to the Tembisa SAPS, it is believed the officers assaulted and tortured the man with a shocking device. He died of his injuries in hospital,” she said.
According to Ms Langa, the incident took place on December 14 last year.
“The police officers were also searching for a firearm. The arrested officers appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court and were remanded into custody. They will appear in court again on September 1 for a formal bail application,” said Ms Langa.
