The Mathebula family awoke to a pool of water covering their entire yard at 635 Tlamatlama Extension on August 25.
The family was alerted to the unexpected flood at 4am, when neighbours warned them about the water.
A neighbour noticed some water running into the street and assumed it was probably a tap left open in one of the houses.
“My gate was locked and he phoned my other neighbour who then phoned my wife. We woke up and tried to investigate what the cause could be. We identified the source in the middle of the yard,” said Mr Russell Mathebula.
Mr Mathebula said at 8.30am they had not been helped, despite having contacted the emergency services between 5am and 6am.
“I am confused. I am supposed to be at work at the moment but I can’t leave my house like this,” said Mr Mathebula.
A neighbour said it was the first time they had seen something like this at any of the houses in the section.
“We usually have sewer blockages and when we report it, people take a long long time to respond,” said Mr Judas Tjia, Mr Mathebula’s neighbour.
“I had to fetch them personally because nobody had helped us since 5am,” said Mrs Josephine Mathebula.
Meanwhile, further down Voyager Street, water leaked from beneath the tarred road and into a neighbour’s front yard.
The community suspects shoddy workmanship on the part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s (EMM) plumbers and poor planning by their contractors.
They believe the infrastructure needs to be re-visited.
The Tembisan sent an inquiry to the EMM.
