Yesterday the Democratic Alliance Deputy Chief Whip in Parliament and Lethabong Constituency Head, Mike Waters MP, laid charges against the municipal manager of the Ekurhuleni Metro, Mr Khaya Ngema at Tembisa South Police Station.
MP Waters said the charges were for the contravention of the National Water Act.
“We sent water samples from Tembisa for testing which revealed the water contained high levels of E-Coli bacteria and general bacteria and due to sewerage leaking into water, the level of coliforms (which consists of human and animal faeces) is 80 000, while the acceptable level is only 30,” he said.
He said a petition, calling for the Ekurhuleni Metro to take urgent action to ensure the water is safe for residents to use, will be handed over to council and it will be submitted to the National Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane for her department’s urgent intervention.
“We have also lodged a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission,” MP Waters said.
