TWO Pomona shebeens were shut down on Saturday during a stop-and-search operation conducted around Kempton Park between Friday night and early Saturday morning last week.
Over 100lt of diesel was also confiscated during the operation, which was conducted by members of Kempton Police’s Crime Prevention Unit and the EMPD.
According to spokesperson for the police, Capt Jethro Mtshali, the operation, which yielded about 12 arrests, was led by the head of Kempton Park Crime Prevention, Col Malesela Mapulane.
“Between Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29, from 9pm to 5am, six liquor outlets were also raided and all were issued with fines for failing to comply with the Liquor Act. Two shebeens were closed down in Pomona and had their liquor seized,” Mtshali explained.
At one of the liquor outlets police found seven 20lt containers filled with diesel, totalling 140lt altogether, which was confiscated.
During the same operation, about 12 people were also arrested for various crimes, including suspected drunken driving, possession of an unlicensed firearm, common robbery and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
“Col Mapulane would like to thank the community for their cooperation and warns that these kinds of operations will continue throughout the year until the festive season,” added Mtshali.
