IT is unlawful for a company to extract water from a water resource without a licence.
These licences are regulated by the Department of Water and Sanitation in Pretoria.
This is according to Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni Metro spokesman, after ward councillor Pieter Henning spotted a tanker filling up with water at Bredell Dam a while ago.

“When one tries to talk to the drivers, all they can say is that their managers have told them to draw water from the dam. I left my business cards with them for the managers to call me without any response,” he said.
Gadebe said in this case it was not clear whether this specific truck had a licence or not.
“In 2013 a case was opened at Norkem Park Police Station against a construction company who extracted water from a dam in Tembisa. Perhaps the same can be done in this case. I advise the councillor to contact the relevant department.”
