IT is critical that the road network in Kempton Park is upgraded to prevent bottleneck situations during peak hours.
Roads have become littered with potholes and traffic comes to a standstill during peak hours due to the high volumes of cars passing through the area, ward councillor Johann Jordaan said.
The daily congestion at the Elgin Road subway in Birchleigh is one example.

More height restriction signage is also urgently needed just before this bridge to prevent big trucks using this road as many have gotten stuck under the bridge in the past, Jordaan said.
Jordaan highlighted five major roads that should be earmarked for top priority upgrades. These are Mooirivier Drive from Pongolarivier Drive in Norkem Park; Soutpansberg Drive in Van Riebeeck Park towards CR Swart Drive; De Wiekus Road in Van Riebeeck Park; the P91/R25 Modderfontein Road; and Pongolarivier Drive from Birch Acres to the P91/R25 connection in Birchleigh North.
“It is unfortunate that the metro did not incorporate these upgrades when the Kempton Park CBD was being developed around the OR Tambo International Airport. The result is that it is more than likely going to cost more to implement these upgrades retrospectively.
“Kempton Park’s residents and motorists are entitled to have access to a well maintained road network that is able to accommodate the increased traffic volumes,” Jordaan said.
Kempton Express is waiting for comment from the metro.
