Toddler’s half-naked body found after mother’s night at shebeen

A man with whom the mother went drinking allegedly drove off with the child after an argument

A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder and possible kidnapping of a little Ivory Park girl.

This comes after the body of the toddler was found in an open veld in Rabie Ridge in Tembisa on Saturday morning. The girl had allegedly been reported missing by her mother on Friday.

The body of the little girl was found by a community member who was passing by the veld at about 6.30am and noticed the girl’s body, Kempton Police spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, confirmed.

The body of the 14-month-old baby girl was half-naked.

“During investigations, it was established that the previous night (Friday) the mother of the girl had reported to Ivory Park SAPS that a man had driven off with her daughter,” Mtshali said.

According to the police, the girl’s mother had taken her child along while she drank at the pub with two men.

“Later, all three of them left the shebeen in a car, a metered taxi, belonging to the suspect. They first dropped one man at his home before proceeding to the woman’s home,” said Mtshali.

The mother and the suspect allegedly had an argument on the way and she exited the car. The suspect then sped off with the toddler still inside the car.

“At this stage it is not known how the child was killed as the body has to be taken for a post mortem to establish the exact cause of death,” said Mtshali.

The suspect will appear in court on Tuesday.
