Man hangs himself after argument with wife
'We called the wife and we established she was at the police station. Calls to the husband's phone went through to voice mail.'
A man was found hanging from a tree behind St Gemmas Primary School on Monday.
According to the neighboring community, the man may have hanged himself following a fight with his wife.
Ms Asinath Chilongo, the man’s landlord in Esangweni, said the couple was fighting in the early hours of the morning and the argument resulted in the whole house being burnt.
“We don’t know the cause of the fire. We received a call at around 2am from the other tenants, who said the house was on fire,” said Ms Chilongo.
Ms Chilongo said the deceased threatened to lock his wife inside the house and torch it.
It is believed that while the man did managed to lock his wife in the house, she managed to escape.
When we arrived, neither the husband nor the wife were at the house.
“We called the wife and we established she was at the police station. Calls to the husband’s phone went through to voice mail,” she said.
Ms Chilongo also opened a case with the police as she lost her property in the fire.
“In the morning, we noticed people gathered behind the school and some of the tenants went to look. They confirmed it was the tenant who had had an argument with his wife who was hanging from the tree,” said Ms Chilongo.
