MEMBERS of the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) gathered outside Germiston Civic Centre Centre last week Thursday to demand their full increases as promised.
According to the members, they were paid their salaries for September but without the new increase that was promised to them by Ekurhuleni Metro.
“This is not a strike,” declared one of the members as he addressed the crowds.
“Our bosses didn’t give us our money and that’s why we are here today. Siye eBenoni, eKempton Park namanye futhi ama-pay offices, kodwa basitshele ukuthi abanayo imali, kumele size la eGermiston (we went to Benoni, Kempton Park and other pay offices, but they all said they don’t have our money. We were then told to come here to Germiston),” SAMWU members chanted.
This comes after the metro issued a statement on September 20 that the full increment of 7% would be paid out to all municipality employees.
The council had a discussion on the issue on the same day at the monthly council meeting and a resolution for the salary increases was passed.
According to Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, the payments with the full 7% increase, backdated to July 1, were made on Saturday.
