Centre assists with children’s needs by providing a helping hand

With the help a few children and a group of women from the community, she started looking after orphanages and disadvantaged children.

Ms Julia Maelane formed the Ivory Park Community Centre in 2013 from nothing, after she noticed young children starving when they returned from school every day.

Ms Maelane shared space with a church in Ivory Park, Extension 8, and responded to this need.

With the help a few children and a group of women from the community, she started looking after orphanages and disadvantaged children.

From these humble beginnings, the Ivory Park Community Centre was founded, which today is an established home caring for roughly 389 children with 15 volunteers.

Ms Maelane said the centre was formed as a place of safety for orphans, abandoned, abused and neglected children, many of whom do not have parents.

“We help the children with their homework. They participate in sports, drama, poetry and traditional music, among other activities,” she said.

Through the hard work, determination and help from the community and sponsors, the Ivory Park Community Centre is developing against all odds.
