Critically injured baby airlifted from Monument Rd accident

Their Jaguar was pushed into a nearby fence

A 24-year-old mother and her three-month-old baby sustained critical injuries in an accident on Monument Road on Saturday evening.

Their Jaguar and a VW Golf collided at the intersection with Friedman Street around 8pm.

Werner Vermaak of ER24 said paramedics found the Jaguar with severe damage pushed through a fence on the side of the road. Upon further assessment they found that a 24-year-old woman was in a critical condition in the back seat of the vehicle.

Her baby was also found in a serious condition. A man, believed to be the father, was walking around on the scene with moderate injuries.

Paramedics immediately focused their attention on the baby and mother. They had to be stabilised on scene before they could be transported to hospital. It is believed the mother sustained serious head injuries during the collision. She was extricated from the vehicle and rushed to Tembisa Hospital.

An emergency helicopter was called to the scene to airlift the baby to a Johannesburg hospital. The dad was later also transported to Tembisa Hospital.

The exact cause of the collision is not yet known. Bystanders said the VW Golf collided into the passenger’s side of the Jaguar sending it into the nearby fence. Paramedics assessed the occupants of the VW Golf. They declined to be transported to hospital, Vermaak said

Local authorities attended the incident and will conduct an investigation to establish the exact cause of the collision.
