Update: Bridge collapse death toll rises to three

Emergency services are still on the scene

Sandton Chronicle reported this morning that a third person has died following the Grayston Drive bridge collapse on Wednesday afternoon.

It is also believed a body is still trapped in the debris.

ONE person was killed and at least 17 injured when the scaffolding of a pedestrian bridge collapsed onto the M1 near Grayston Drive on Wednesday afternoon.

Pieter Rossouw of ER24 said ER24 paramedics along with other services, including Life Healthcare, were on the scene.

The injuries that were sustained ranged from minor to critical.

The bridge was being built parallel to Grayston Drive on the M1 highway.

The temporary bridge collapsed at around 3:45pm. Traffic is badly affected on both sides of the road.

Ambulances are on the scene, with reports emerging of cars trapped under the wreckage.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesman, Robert Mulaudzi, said a vehicle had been trapped underneath the scaffolding of the bridge.
