DA welcomes closure of Benoni Bunny Park

'It is imperative that the metro maintains the park’s upkeep and ensures that the wellbeing of the animals is a priority at all times'

THE Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni has welcomed the decision by the metro to close the infamous Bunny Park in Benoni while subject to investigation.

The park has been closed with immediate effect while Ekurhuleni Parks Department conduct an assessment of the situation – with particular focus on the condition of the animals – and then provide a full report in due course.

This comes after months of reports from residents and news agencies regarding the condition of the rabbits, some of which have reportedly been suffering from starvation and neglect.

“With the situation reaching crisis point, the DA attended a meeting at the parks department with Ekurhuleni officials and interested groups. The party’s representatives were adamant that the metro should close the facility and conduct a thorough investigation in order to resolve the concerns with urgency,” Fortune Mahano, leader of the DA Ekurhuleni caucus, said in a statement.

“As a popular source of entertainment for many families, it is imperative that the metro maintains the park’s upkeep and ensures that the wellbeing of the animals is a priority at all times. The DA will continue to apply pressure on the metro to remedy the situation speedily for the benefit of all residents who visit there and the welfare of the animals.

“The DA is concerned that the recent negative reports will deter the many other visitors who come from far and wide to bring their loved ones to the park to enjoy the animals. We need to restore the public’s confidence that all is well at the bunny park,” Mahano said.
