‘Explosions’ heard before power went off this morning

Residents believe a power surge went through and that 'things are fried'

Many residents in Van Riebeeck Park, Edleen, Terenure and apparently Kempton Park West are without power this morning.

Many took to social media around 3.30am reporting lights going off and on again before it finally went out. It was reported that a power surge could have damaged several boxes and a substation in Edleen.

This still has to be confirmed with the metro.

One resident at 3.22am wrote the substation on Suikerbos Street was making “very scary noises”. “It actually looks like it is about to blow,” he said.

Only minutes later he reported that the noise had stopped but it seemed it had moved somewhere else.

“I heard the explosions one after the other all the way from Edleen up to Terenure, so it must be something serious,” another resident posted.

Residents believe a power surge went through and that “things are fried”.

According to another resident the explosions and sparks were the transformers at a substation that went one after the other.

Express will follow up with the metro and post more details as soon as we know what the exact situation is.
