Residents to be without power for the next three days

Cable theft could have been the cause of the 'explosions'

ELECTRICITY will be out for about three days for some residents in Kempton Park.

Areas that will be affected, according to Ward Councillor Jaco Terblanche, include parts of Van Riebeeck Park, Terenure,  Edleen and Birch Acres. A Kempton Park West resident on social media added that their power was also affected.

Electricity line explosion: parts of Kempton Park without power

This follows “explosions” heard by residents in the early hours of Wednesday morning. By about 3am, residents say, the power was out in certain areas.

Terblanche told EXPRESS on Wednesday morning around 8am he had just come back from a site visit at the substation at the corner of Soutpansberg Drive and De Wiekus Road in Van Riebeeck Park.

A few electrical boxes were also reported to have exploded in some areas in Van Riebeeck Park.

“The best engineers from the electricity department are on site working on the problem,” Terblanche explained.

“It’s currently believed that the explosion at the substation  was caused by cable theft on the corner of Panorama Road and Suikerbos Street in Edleen.”

Terblanche said he would request that the metro add additional EMPD patrols in the affected areas to keep residents safe.

“They (electricians) estimate the power may be out for about 72 hours.”

Terblanche said he would keep EXPRESS updated on any changes.

We are still waiting for official comment from the metro.
