Drugs found in shoes, hollowed-out book

The busts were made in two separate incidents

Drugs worth around R700 000 were confiscated at OR Tambo International Airport the past few days.

A Customs detector dog and handler were doing inspections of parcels at DHL at OR Tambo when the dog reacted positively to a parcel destined for Spain.

They then discovered four bags containing a powder-like substance hidden in the cut-out pages of a book. The substance tested positive for heroin.

Altogether 1kg of heroin valued at R201 810 was found.

These are significant seizures by SARS Customs who implement daily inspections in an effort to foil smuggling of goods.

Gauteng police on Friday said they caught a man at OR Tambo International Airport trying to smuggle cocaine worth R500 000 in his shoes.

According to a tweet by the @SAPoliceService, the 48-year-old man was caught on Thursday afternoon.

The cocaine was found in his soles and laptop bag.
