Fight Like a Girl! raises R5 000 for breast cancer

On Saturday, Kempton women put in pink hair extensions for R100 during the event for the drive

MISS Tiny Rainbow Nation 2015, Nikita Swartz, joined Glen Marais’ The Hair Hub this past Saturday to raise money for cancer.

Their drive, called “Fight Like A Girl!”, was held as part of national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is October.

Throughout the month, Swartz and the salon handed out information pamphlets to all the clients who visited the salon.

The initiative, which six-year-old Swartz was a part of, managed to raise almost R5000. All the proceeds have already been donated to CANSA.

The owner of the salon, Anita Fick, is a breast cancer survivor and was inspired to join the campaign by her own story, as well as her life philosophy which is to always care.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer on July 17 this year and had a mastectomy on August 4,” Fick said.

“For the past two years, I was just feeling very tired all the time, but I just kept brushing it off. I was lucky enough for the doctor to have picked it up while I was going for check-ups unrelated to the cancer. That’s why I can’t stress enough the importance for young women especially to take care of themselves by going for regular check-ups,” Fick emphasised.

On Saturday, Kempton women put in pink hair extensions for R100 during the event for the drive.

Great Lengths also donated hair extensions to the cause, and the salon bought pink ribbons and CANSA T-shirts in support of the organisation.

Honey Accessories Kempton Park also supported the event.
