Traffic delays on CR Swart Drive as gantry is being removed

The billboard, along with two others, were mounted illegally without permission from the municipality

MOTORISTS endured traffic delays on CR Swart Drive on Tuesday as a result of a huge billboard gantry, which is illegal, being removed in front of the civic centre.

The gantry, erected by Design Initiatives and currently advertising Pennypinchers, had been dismantled on Tuesday morning. Hours later, traffic was still backed up.

According to a lawyer representing Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality, the billboard, along with two others, one in Bedfordview and another in Boksburg, were mounted illegally without permission from the municipality.

“Design Initiatives illegally put up three gantries, the one in Kempton Park, one on North Rand Road and one on Van Buuren Road. We obtained a court order last year to remove them and are now executing it,” she said.

The lawyer, who prefers to remain anonymous, showed EXPRESS the court ruling of May 13 last year.

It ordered the removal of the advertising signs as well as payment by the respondent of the costs incurred for the removal as well as all legal costs.

The gantry on Van Buuren Road was removed in December.
