Arts group invited to international festival

"This is the second time Tswepa has been invited by the Rodrigues Regional Assembly through its Youth Commission."

Members of Tswelopele Performing Arts (Tswepa) from Tembisa have been invited to take part in the Lakka Lakka International Youth Event, hosted on the island of Rodrigues.

The island is located in the Indian Ocean, about 560 kilometres from Mauritius.

The event is scheduled for the first school term holidays from April 1 to 17.

“This is the second time Tswepa has been invited by the Rodrigues Regional Assembly through its Youth Commission, but this might remain a dream if the group fails to raise funds for airfare. The invitation is open to 15 delegates per organisation, therefore our group is forced to raise an amount of R150 000,” said Mr Oupa Malatjie, the group’s artistic director and founder.

Mr Malatjie said the group failed to attend last year due to a lack of funds.

Other youth groups came from Mauritius, Seychelles and South Africa, and the aim is to set up a hub of potential in the region.

Tswepa, which was formed in 1994, has been staging shows at community halls and local restaurants, performing cultural dance, drums and community theatre to local and international tourists.

This cultural exchange is contributing immensely to building social cohesion and unity among all race groups.

The commission will provide board and lodging and internal transportation in Rodrigues to 50 delegates (participants and resource persons) from Mauritius, Seychelles and South Africa.

Anyone who is willing to sponsor the group, can contact Mr Oupa Malatjie on 083 4866790.
