THE metro remains silent about any possible improvements to the main feeder roads in the city.
Despite sending several questions, posed by the DA, to the metro for comment, Express has not received a reply in weeks.
“Kempton Park used to have a well-developed road network but traffic flow has increased over the past few years, adding strain to the road network,” ward councillor Johan Jordaan said.

“As a result, roads in Kempton Park and surrounding suburbs have become littered with potholes and traffic comes to a standstill during peak hours due to the high volume of cars passing through the area. It is therefore critical that the road network in Kempton Park is upgraded to prevent bottleneck situations like the daily congestion seen at the Elgin Road bridge in Birchleigh and at Mooirivier Road in Norkem Park. Timeous maintenance and repairs to the road network must also be done.
In September 2015, Jordaan submitted written questions to council for the MMC for Roads and Transport, Petrus Mhlari, to highlight the poor quality of the Kempton Park road network and requested the metro’s plans regarding certain issues. Express submitted the same questions to the metro for comment.
These questions are:
1. What plans are in place for the upgrading of major feeder roads into and from Kempton Park?
2. If there are no plans to upgrade the major feeder roads into and from Kempton Park, why not?
3. If there are plans, what budget and time frame allocations have been made for the upgrading of the major feeder roads into and from Kempton Park?
4. What plans are in place for the maintenance and repair of the present road network in Kempton Park and the surrounding suburbs?
5. If there are no plans for the maintenance and repair of the present road network in Kempton Park and the surrounding suburbs, why not?
6. If there are plans, what budget and time frame allocations have been made for the maintenance and repairs of the present road network in Kempton Park and the surrounding suburbs?
“It appears Ekurhuleni Metro has no fixed plan in place to upgrade and maintain Kempton Park’s road network, as MMC Mhlari has failed to provide any answers to these questions to date,” Jordaan said.
