IN a surprising move the DA in Ekurhuleni picked a former ANC activist as its mayoral candidate for the 2016 local government elections on Tuesday morning.
Ghaleb Cachalia has apparently only been with the DA for a couple of months. The mayoral candidate was selected by an electoral college preceding the announcement.
“The ANC’s support in Ekurhuleni has been declining, with a significant drop in votes between 2009 (67.5%) and 2014 (55.07%). This decline, along with the continued service delivery protests across the metro, indicates that the residents of Ekurhuleni is ready for change,” Democratic Alliance Gauteng leader, John Moodey MPL, said.
DA councillors and supporters are still gathered at Germiston Civic centre where the announcement was made.
