Hazardous box in Birchleigh open for years

The box powers the traffic lights at the intersection

AN open electricity box on Elgin Road in Birchleigh has been a thorn in the side of the Birchleigh Ratepayers Association for four years.

The box, situated at the intersection with Olienhout Avenue, powers the traffic lights at the intersection.

Dr Stefan Hough, chairman of the association, said, “For more than four years photographs and concerns were raised at the ward 15 meetings, to the Kempton Park community care managers and department heads at the municipality, but with no success.”

Themba Ghadebe, metro spokesman, said the cover of the control box for the traffic lights was stolen.

“The opening has been temporarily closed until the permanent replacement cover, which has been ordered, arrives.

“The City of Ekurhuleni encourages residents to report vandalism or theft through the municipal call centre on 0860 54 3000. Residents should ensure they receive a reference number at all times when logging a call.”
