Some of the victims who were shot were 'innocently waiting for a taxi'

One person has been killed and four others seriously wounded following a shooting at a taxi pick up point at the intersection of Old Pretoria Main Road and Allandale Road in Midrand on Tuesday afternoon around 5pm.

“When Netcare911 paramedics and other emergency services arrived on scene we found one man had already died due to the gunshot wound he sustained. The man was declared dead on the scene,” Athlenda Mathe of Netcare 911 said.

Four people who also sustained gunshot wounds were stabilised on the scene and transported by ambulance to various hospitals for further medical care. One person was in a critical condition.

Max Cohen, spokesman for Emer-G-Med, said  it was believed that a group of assailants opened fire on a group of people, comprising passengers, a taxi driver and a taxi owner.

Local authorities were on the scene to conduct a full investigation.
