Man in hot water over unpolished diamonds

Over 1 000 vehicles and 2 216 people were searched during the operation

A 44-year-old man will appear in court after unpolished diamonds were discovered by police in his vehicle on Friday.

The diamonds were found during Operation Basadi by the police’s Ekurhuleni North District Cluster on the R21 highway. The operation, which was organised by the provincial head office, was conducted from 9am until 2pm.

Ivory Park SAPS’s communication officer, W/O Neldah Sekgobela, said over 1 000 vehicles and 2 216 people were searched during the operation.

Police searched for unlicensed firearms, drugs, stolen property, stolen motor vehicles and checked the roadworthiness of vehicles.

Forty-six road traffic fines were also issued.

The operation was joined by SAPS members from Johannesburg North, Johannesburg West, Tshwane West, the EMPD, Gauteng Traffic Police, the K9 Dog Unit, the Mounted Unit which includes horses and members from Gautrain.
