Fleeing suspect allegedly kills himself

It is believed the man had committed an armed robbery at Winnie Mandela, Zone 4.

An unknown man shot and killed himself after the Tembisa SAPS and community members chased him on Thursday.

It is believed the man had committed an armed robbery in Winnie Mandela, Zone 4.

The incident took place at around 12.40 pm.

According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, the armed suspect ran towards the Ivory Park Informal Settlement.

“It is thought the man fired shots at the police. The SAPS members fired back and the suspect allegedly shot himself. He was certified dead at the scene,” said W/O Sekgobela.

According to W/O Sekgobela, a Norinco 9mm pistol and ammunition were found on the scene.

“The serial number on the firearm was filled off. An attempted murder inquest and a possession of an unlicensed firearm docket were opened,” said W/O Sekgobela.
