A 29-year-old Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department officer appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face extortion and common robbery charges after he allegedly took money from two Chinese men.
Mthunzi Mdlalose, an OR Tambo International Airport-based officer, was arrested on Friday by the South African Police Service’s detective task team, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, national police spokesman, said.
“Mdlalose is alleged to have, while on duty at the airport, stopped the complainants for failing to stop at a traffic sign within the airport’s vicinity, but ended up extorting US$120 (about R1 735) from the complainants. The complainants opened a case against the suspect whom they later identified. The crime is alleged to have been committed on Thursday last week,” Mulaudzi said.
The case has been postponed to June 9 for further investigations. The accused has been granted R2 000 bail and has been warned to appear before the same court.
