Expensive wedding dress missing after hijacking

Metro police recover five hijacked vehicles in two days

THE metro police recovered five stolen and hijacked vehicles in Kempton Park and Tembisa in two days.

The recoveries were made between Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7, Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said.

Two vehicles were taken in Midrand, one in Bedfordview, one in Birchleigh North and one in Birch Acres. The recoveries were a joint effort between the metro police and vehicle tracking companies.

Kgasago said a white Audi A4 was hijacked by two armed men in Birchleigh North at around 5.30am on May 6. The car was found at 6.10am abandoned in Ivory Park ext 2 on Quattro Street in Angola Section.

On the same Friday a VW Golf GT was stolen in Midrand at 2pm. It was recovered at 8.20pm on Lewerik Street in Rabie Ridge. The dashboard was stripped as the thieves were apparently searching for the tracker unit in an effort to render the vehicle untraceable.

Also on May 6, at around 10pm, a maroon Toyota Corolla was hijacked in Birch Acres. The unlucky victim had a wedding to run the next day. In the taken vehicle was an expensive wedding dress and five pairs of shoes.

The hijackers shot through the driver’s window to scare off the resisting owner.

The vehicle was recovered abandoned within minutes of the hijacking at 10.23pm in Umbumbulo Street in Birch Acres. Although the wedding dress was missing, the consolation to the owner was that the five pairs of wedding shoes were recovered.

On Saturday, May 7 at about 9pm, the metro police received information from a tracking company that they were pursuing a black Toyota Tazz stolen in Pretoria, heading towards Tembisa. The Toyota Tazz was recovered abandoned at 9.32pm on Samora Street in Hospital View in Tembisa. Its ignition was removed and door locks damaged.

Also on May 7, at 1pm in Bedfordview, a Porsche Cayenne was hijacked. The Porsche was recovered at 2pm in Croydon. The keys were missing.

All the recovered vehicles were taken to the SAPS Van Ryn Deep pound in Benoni. Investigations are under way in all five cases to catch the culprits.
