Thief caught in the act

"The man and his friends had broken the wall and gained access to where the ATM was."

A 35-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for a business burglary at the Tonko Shopping Centre.

Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha said during the early hours of May 15, SAPS members were on patrol in Emfihlweni when they were alerted to an alarm activation at the centre.

“While SAPS was still investigating, security services also arrived. A ladder was used to climb over the high wall. They noticed there was somebody on top of the roof,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.

“He was forced to come down and was told to surrender. It was established that the man was trying to break into an ATM machine.

“The man and his friends had broken the wall and gained access to where the ATM was,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.

The man’s accomplices managed to flee.

He was arrested and detain at the police cells in Tembisa.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon, facing a charge of business burglary.
