Drugs worth over R10-m confiscated in busts at airport

South African Revenue Service customs officials intercepted an unaccompanied bag from India containing five plastic bags of Crystal meth, valued at R8.1-million, at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday, last week.

The bag was from Chennai India, travelling via Abu Dhabi. It was scanned and revealed a suspicious sugar-like substance which turned out to be Crystal meth.

No one has come forward to claim the bag and the narcotics have been handed over to the police for further investigation.

On Thursday, last week‚ a male passenger from Sao Paulo was intercepted at OR Tambo, carrying 8.40kg of cocaine valued at R2.341-m.

The man was on his way to Mozambique.

SARS said his checked-in black bag was scanned and showed two backpacks concealed inside, as well as a suspicious looking white substance that turned out to be cocaine.
