A driver in a Maserati doing 245km/h had been arrested on the R21 south early on Sunday morning.
The 38-year-old motorist, who was travelling with a a 17-year-old and four-year-old in the car, claimed he was rushing to the airport, Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said.
He was caught around 7.30am at the R562 bridge. He was detained at Olifantsfontein Police Station and charged with reckless and negligent driving.
Six more drivers, which included a motorcyclist, were arrested at the same location, which is a 120km/h zone. The arrested drivers advanced reasons ranging from rushing to their destinations to not being aware of the speedometer, Kgasago said.
The six drivers registered speeds of 174, 173, 168, 167, 166 and 162km/h. The arrests were effected between 6am and 8.30.
All the arrested speedsters were charged at Olifantsfontein Police Station with reckless and negligent driving and were later released on R1 000 bail each. They will appear in Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on today.
