High speed chase leads police to unlicensed gun

Four suspects have been taken into custody for being in possession of an unlicensed 9mm Norinco pistol

A case of possession of an unlicensed firearm is being investigated by police after a 9mm Norinco pistol was dropped by four fleeing suspects.

According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, the gun was abandoned during a high-speed chase on Maxwell Street in the CBD in the early hours of Saturday morning, May 28.

“While members of our crime prevention unit were patrolling along Pretoria Road at 2.45am, they received a call on the police’s radio system that another police vehicle was chasing a suspicious white VW Jetta,” Mtshali confirmed.

“During the chase, one of the suspects dropped something out of the car just before police managed to corner them.”

When the cops went to check what was dropped, they discovered a loaded 9mm Norinco. Inside the suspects’ car, officers found a toy gun.

The four suspects, aged 30, 32, 36, and 37, will appear in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court where they will face charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

In a separate incident on May 26, Benoni’s Flying Squad arrested a Nigerian man (25) for possession of drugs.

According to Mtshali, the officers were patrolling along Atlas and Geldenhuys roads in Bonaero Park when they spotted a suspicious looking green Chery vehicle.

They ordered the motorist to pull over and when the vehicle was searched, a sachet containing drugs was found inside the car.
