Bolokanang burial society robbed of R16 000

Society members believe they were followed from the bank.

A local burial society was allegedly robbed of R16 000 by two men in Winnie Mandela Zone 5.

The robbery occurred at around 2pm on June 2 after two members of Bolokanang Burial Society had withdrawn the cash from one of the banks at Phumulani Mall.

According to Ms Violet Sithole, after they had withdrawn the money, they walked straight to their other member’s house.

“On arrival, we found her son. She was at a church and we waited for her to return so that we can give her the money that was suppose to pay for transport to go to a member’s funeral.

“I was busy checking for my snuff and tissue in my handbag when I realised I was held at gunpoint. The firearm was held to my forehead. The suspect took my handbag. I was very shocked and scared,” said Ms Sithole.

Ms Sithole added that her fellow society member Mr Maotshi Mphahlele was also held at gunpoint.

“They instructed us to lie down and they searched Mr Mphahlele and found the money. The two unknown men escaped with the R16 000 cash from our society and my handbag. They fled the scene driving a Hyundai Etios,” Ms Sithole added.

“Members of the community tried to help chase the suspects but the robbers managed to escape with the money. We suspect the robbers followed us from the bank. This is frustrating and challenging,” added Mr Mphahlele.

Tembisa SAPS Communication Officer, Constable Patricia Mgijima, confirmed that a case of armed robbery was opened.

“No one was arrested and the police are investigating the case. We are appealing for any information that could lead to the arrests of the suspects to be reported to the SAPS at 011 926-2970,” Constable Mgijima added.
