THE man, who was found a few metres from a burnt out container on a Pomona construction site on Thursday, has died.
This brings the death toll to three.
Kempton Park SAPS spokesman, Capt Jethro Mtshali, said the man has been identified by his family as Samuel Mokoena.
Mokoena was discovered outside a container in which two male bodies were found by Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services. Both had their hands tied behind them.
“The other victims, who were burnt beyond recognition, have not been identified yet. They can only be positively identified through DNA examination,” said Mtshali.
Mtshali said it was believed the victims were employees of the construction company on the site where the incident took place. LK Development’s Rudi Sinden denied this and said none of the three deceased were employees of the company.
He refused to give any further comment.
Mtshali said no arrests had been made and cases of arson, murder, attempted murder and possible robbery were being investigated.
Ekurhuleni executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, expressed shock at these deaths in the city.
“This is extremely shocking. First our teams respond to a fire emergency at a construction site in Pomona in the early hours of the morning and, after defeating the flames, they make a shocking discovery of two bodies burnt beyond recognition and a third man badly injured on the scene,” he said.
”A few hours later a car plunged into five women who were making their way to work, killing four and critically injuring one.”
“Although the facts are not clear as to what happened in either incident, we are optimistic that investigations will reveal the truth. For now, we send the city’s condolences to the families of those who died in these horrific incidents.”
