Conman scams young job seeker

Due to the high unemployment rate in the country, con artists usually target people desperately looking for work

KEMPTON SAPS has issued a warning to job seekers to be weary of people who offer them jobs under false pretences.

This comes after a young job seeker was scammed by a man who pretended to offer her a job at Telkom.

Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesman for the police, said the woman (24) was on her way to Kempton Civic Centre to drop off her CV on May 26.

“The victim was confronted by a man who promised her a job at Telkom and told her to give him her CV and cellphone,” Mtshali explained.

“The man then gave the victim his Capitec bank card and pin number and told her to go withdraw cash so she could buy herself a uniform for ‘the Telkom job’.”

Believing the conman, she went to an ATM but found there was no money available in the said account. When she went back to the conman, he had vanished with her cellphone, CV and R50 cash.

Due to the high unemployment rate in the country con artists usually target people desperately looking for work. One of the biggest red flags is a recruiter asking for money from you in return for finding you a job.

According to Job Offer Sound Too Good? 10 Tips on How to Avoid Job Scams and Schemes by Randall S. Hansen on livecareer.com, recruiters are hired and paid by the companies looking for new employees. Therefore job seekers are not obliged to pay recruiters money.

“Furthermore, most of the scammers who ask you to pay for job leads will provide you — if they actually do so — with the same ones you could find on a search of Indeed or other job-search engines,” writes Hansen.
