Chess tournament to be held

"We are currently running our chess programme in local schools every week to help pupils."

The Tembisa Chess Club will be hosting its second annual open chess tournament on June 16.

The tournament will be held at Child Academy Private School next to Thembi Mall and will be held from 9am to 6pm

According to one of the organisers, Mr Vusumuzi Mokone, the event is aimed at bringing the Tembisa youth together since it is Youth Month.

“We want the youth to indulge more in activities and initiatives that will benefit not only them but the community. On the day we will be raising funds for the underprivileged, children homes and old age centres around Tembisa,” said Mr Mokone.

Mr Mokone said they are appealing to business people, individuals or any good Samaritans to help build a chess culture in Tembisa and make the event a success.

“We are currently running our chess programme in local schools every week to help pupils obtain better mathematics and physical science results,” said Mr Mokone.

When asked how chess helps maths pupils, Mr Mokone said chess strengthens problem solving skills, teaches one to make difficult and abstract discussions independently and also enhances reading, memory and language.

Tembisa youngsters are urged to attend and enjoy Youth Day while learning how to play chess.

A R1 000 cash prize is up for grabs for the best chess player on the day.

Registrations for the tournament are open and will be closed on the morning of June 16.
