Three drug dealers nabbed in CBD in one week

One of them tried to bribe a police officer with R1 800

THREE Nigerian nationals have been nabbed in Kempton for drug dealing.

One of them was further slapped with bribery charges after offering a police officer R1 800 to get out of going to jail.

The first incident occurred on Saturday night when Kempton police arrested a Nigerian national (36) at his flat for drug dealing.

According to Kempton SAPS spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, police received a tip-off that someone living at a block of flats on Long Street was allegedly selling drugs. Following up on the information, police officers made their way to the apartment at about 10pm.

“After knocking on the door, the suspect came to open but when he realised it was the police, he quickly closed the door and locked it. The police forced the door open and searched the premises,” Mtshali explained.

Inside the flat, cops found small plastic bags containing methcathinone (popularly known as cat).

Earlier that day at about 5pm, another Nigerian suspect was arrested for being in possession of drugs. The 40-year-old was caught on the corner of Monument and Kempton roads with cat inside a plastic bag.

On Friday night Lt Col Robbie Roberts of the crime prevention unit was patrolling on Friedman Street at about 8.30pm when he saw a suspicious-looking man.

“He approached the man and requested to search him. While searching him he found a large number of drugs and informed the suspect that he was under arrest.”

At this stage the suspect allegedly offered Roberts R1 800 so he wouldn’t be taken into custody. Roberts refused to take the money and a charge of bribery was added.

In the last incident, a 33-year-old Nigerian was apprehended for dealing in drugs on Wednesday last week on North Rand Road.

“While police were patrolling, they noticed a suspicious person standing on the street at shortly before 8pm. When the police called him, the suspect tried to run away but was chased down.”

Upon searching him, a packet containing drugs was found. The suspect was instructed to lead the police to his place, where more narcotics were found.
