Two men clad in SAPS uniforms robbed a man in his room on July 1.
Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha said a complainant from Seotloane Section calimed to hear people shouting that they were police officers.
“The victim peeped through the window. He saw two men in police uniforms with somebody who was handcuffed. He was instructed to open the door. The men entered and told him the handcuffed person alleged he had sold him stolen property,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.
“They called the complainant by his nickname.”
Capt Ralidzhivha said the suspects searched the victim’s room and took 20 watches, two cellphones and cash.
“The two bogus police officers were both in possession of firearms. They threatened him with the firearms.”
After taking the goods, they left the room.
“The victim followed them as he was suspicious about them,” he said.
“One of the suspects saw him following. He shot the victim in his leg. He was taken to hospital and on his discharge he went to open a case with the SAPS.”
“The suspects ran away with the handcuffed man. It was later established that the two men are not police officers but were police impersonators.”
Capt Ralidzhivha also warned that in the Sebenza SAPS precinct, there is a fully marked police bakkie with two men driving around wearing police uniforms, bearing Constable ranks.
“The NP200 bakkie has the registration number BRT 353 GP. The bakkie doesn’t have a call sign but it’s marked with the station name ‘Sebenza’. Please be on the lookout. These bogus Constables are armed,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.
