FOUR motorists, together owing R17 800 in outstanding traffic fines, ended up behind bars after being stopped at roadblocks set up by Ekurhuleni Metro Police’s warrants unit on July 19.
“The four big fish were arrested as they could not afford to raise that huge amount,” Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said.
On that day Tembisa and Kempton Park motorists who were stopped in roadblocks were caught owing a staggering R90 000 in outstanding fines.
Kgasago said the warrants unit, on a daily basis, put up random roadblocks Ekurhuleni-wide to bring to book motorists who failed to pay their traffic fines.
“In the past three months not less that thirty-six drivers have landed behind bars and dozens have had to part with huge amounts of unbudgeted cash as the result of failure to meet their obligations in terms of traffic fines. Some motorists deceive themselves that they would never be caught. This is a fallacy that will land those who rely on ducking in deep trouble,” Kgasago warned.
The EMPD urges motorists to regularly make inquiries as to whether they have outstanding fines or warrants of arrests which arise out of failure to pay and failure to contest the fine in court.
