Police catch hijackers

Hijacked cars discovered in Tembisa.

Three suspects were arrested in Hospital View for the hijacking of two cars on July 27.

Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha said members of the SAPS flying squad were on patrol around Tembisa and were on the look-out for a Ford Fiesta.

“While the flying squad was in Hospital View, they noticed the car they were looking for, parked on the street next to a Toyota Yaris,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.

“The SAPS members immediately went to the two cars parked on the street. Three men exited the vehicles. They tried to run away but the police had already cornered them.”

“One of the suspects was in possession of a firearm and four rounds of live ammunition. The 39 year old failed to produce a license for the firearm,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.

He said after verification, both vehicles were identified as hijacked cars.

“A Ford Fiesta was hijacked from Lyttelton on July 25 at about 7.20pm. The owner alleged that she was about to park her vehicle when she noticed an Isuzu bakkie at the gate. Two men who were in possession of firearms, pointed the guns at her and her mother,” he said.

“A Toyota Yaris was taken from its owner in Norkem Park.”

Capt Ralidzhivha said the owner alleged that she was at the gate in the company of her husband. Three men confronted them and two were in possession of firearms.

“They robbed her of the vehicle, other valuables and three cellphones. The suspects drove off in her car.”

“Both cars were recovered at the scene. The three suspects, ranging from 36 to 39, were immediately arrested for possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles and possession of unlicensed firearm,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.

“It was further established that the 39 year old is a parolee. He was serving 15 years for carjacking. Both suspects had previous convictions. They will soon be appearing before the Magistrate’s Court in Tembisa,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.
