The City of Ekurhuleni will hold its first council meeting after the elections on Friday at 10am the Germiston Council Chambers.
During the meeting a new mayor and speaker of council will be elected. As the ANC failed to obtain a clear majority during the elections, it will all boil down to possible coalitions being formed.
Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman, said: “The metro wishes to express gratitude to residents and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for ensuring maximised participation in the recent local government elections. Ekurhuleni assures residents that the absence of a clear majority by any party in the city will not affect the provision of services.”
The city manager, Khaya Ngema, will preside over the commencement of council until the election of the speaker. Thereafter, the newly elected speaker will preside over council and oversee the election of the executive mayor and chief whip.
