Man convicted of murder

"The family screamed for help. One family member went to seek help from the neighbours."

Bongani Vincent Mashiane was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his girlfriend.

Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha said the 32-year-old was found guilty of killing his girlfriend on October 20, 2012, at her place of residence in Emmangweni Section.

“The grandmother of the deceased told the police that she was with the victim in their house. The boyfriend came to the house. He knocked and entered,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.

“He told her he had brought her some documents. He was in possession of a sports bag. Unaware, the girlfriend went nearer to him to see the documents. Instead of taking out documents from the bag, he took out a big knife. She tried to disarm him but he kicked her and she lost her balance. He then started to stab her.

“The family screamed for help. One family member went to seek help from the neighbours,” said Capt Ralidzhivha.

He said a large number of residents came to assist the family.

“They saw the suspect running away from the house.”

The community gave chase and apprehended him.

They brought him back to the house where he jumped the wall while trying to run away.

“The community gave chase again and apprehended him for a second time.”

Capt Ralidzhivha said the injured 22-year-old girl was transported to hospital by a neighbour.

She was certified dead on arrival at hospital.

The police arrived at the scene and the suspect was handed over to them.

He was detained at the embisa Police Station and he was charged with murder.

Mashiane was sentenced in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on August 11.
