Anti-drugs group pickets against drug dealers’ bail application

The purpose of the picket is to highlight the drastic increase of drug dealing and substance abuse in Kempton

THE Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) picketed against the bail application of two drug dealers on Monday who were arrested on August 8 after a R1.5 million bust in Terenure.

Moses Damion (28), a Ghanaian national, and Ndubisi Timothy Nwanguma (39), a Nigerian national, appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning where their bail application was postponed to September 26.

LDAC members said they would not allow drug dealers in their community and would protest against them being granted bail.

“The purpose of the picket is to highlight the scourge of substance abuse in Kempton which has subsequently led to the increase of other horrendous crimes such as murder, human trafficking and prostitution,” Kempton police spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, said, highlighting the ripple effect drugs have on society.

“This is also one of the reasons why we see more youth – boys and girls – sleeping on the streets. Most of them, if not all, are addicted to the popular nyaope drug.”

Damion and Nwanguma were arrested in connection with operating a drug laboratory manufacturing cat at Kirana complex on Dunlin Street in Terenure.

Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said information received via the Crime Stop anonymous tip-off line resulted in law enforcers discovering the laboratory.

LDAC said they would continue with their protest action that would ensure the two suspects do not receive bail.
