Mlinderoca shakes Tembisa music scene

Mlinderoca runs Tembisa streets through hip hop.

Linda “Mlinderoca” Mabena is a hip hop artist set to surprise many of the genre’s uncompromising followers in Tembisa.

The 29-year-old artist is saluted by a number of his peers in the industry.

The young man began his art by writing and reciting poetry in grade five at Welamlambo Primary School.

“I was good in English and after a well written essay, my English teacher advised me to try my hand at poetry,” said Mlinderoca.

His first poem titled Dead Beat received a positive response and saw him showcasing in the school’s talent show.

Mlinderoca said he started listening to a lot of hip hop and underground rap.

“I was listening to and was inspired by the likes of Immortal Technique with his informative lyrical content,” said Mlinderoca.

While he was in grade seven Mlinderoca was already attending hip hop sessions called Kota tours, hosted in different parts of Tembisa.

“I went to the tours to listen to local hip hop cats and get more knowledge on how to write and recite on a given beat,” he said.

In 2004 he took his talent to the stage and got serious with his art form, competing with the likes of the late Master-G, Arma G, Vintage and Voltage.

Mlinderoca said during that time people were encouraging him to record an album.

“There was a lack of finance and professional studios. Parents were not supportive because they thought rap was all about vulgar language and gangsterism,” he said.

He was therefore stuck in writing and reciting rap without recording his music.

Around 2006 a lot of backyard studios popped up and gave young people a chance to create music with no boundaries.

“I bought a hip hop magazine and discovered Slaag Huis hip hop sessions and I went there. Performing in that session gave me a true reflection with regard to my level of writing skills,” he said.

When Mlinderoca returned from that experience he grew out of producing music for musicians – he then wanted to produce music for everyday people with comic punch lines.

His new style boasted a lot of singalongs that drew in the young and old.

“I started attending and performing in community events instead of appearing in the conventional hip hop sessions,” said Mlinderoca.

Mlinderoca said at the moment he is at his pinnacle and for him music is business.

“Now I need to get paid for my music which is why I’m looking to be signed up for major recording deals,” he said.

His music is readily available on social platforms and anyone can download it.
