Tembisa woman brings award home

Tembisa woman Best Community TV Gospel Presenter award.

A 29-year-old Tembisa woman has received an award as the best presenter in the world of entertainment.

Tebogo Maunatlala is a presenter of Meletlo on Dumisa TV channel 340.

On August 27, Ms Maunatlala was presented with the Best Community TV Gospel Presenter award at the Independent National Gospel Music Awards (Ingoma).

Tebogo Maunatlala went to Theatre on the Track in Kyalami with Meletlo gospel show to cover the event for their content.

Ms Maunatlala said she had submitted her name for the awards but she was only hoping for a nomination.

To her surprise while she was there on duty her name was called out as a winner for the Best Community TV Gospel Presenter.

“I couldn’t believe it and all I could say was: God you are God of miracles. The fact that I got the award shows that people appreciate my work,” said Ms Maunatlala.

She said through the award she wanted to show young girls that poverty doesn’t determine the kind of person one is going to be in the future.

“I want to thank everyone who voted for me”.

Tebogo Maunatlala said while growing up she was never liked by anyone because of sores that covered her entire body.

At the age of six, during her early school days, Tebogo had to look after herself as her mother was suffering from glaucoma, a condition that damages to optic nerve in the eyes and it caused her total permanent blindness.

As a result Tebogo was hardly tidy and was forced by her plight to accept things given to her by families that felt pity for her.

“My body sores made my peers resent me and I would sometimes be kicked out of the class because of my condition,” said Tebogo.

Tebogo said all of that damaged her self esteem but she learnt to regain confidence when she joined a high school’s drama group in the later years.

“Soft porridge was my staple food and that was all we had in the house,” she said.

She said growing up begging made her a humble person.

As an adult Tebogo Maunatlala got an opportunity to work for the Voice of Tembisa as a news anchor and a reporter.

When Dumisa TV was looking for a presenter for Meletlo, a new TV show, Tebogo was lucky to be the winner of the talent search.

“When I began I found the job easy because I had already been on radio and my acting skills helped,” she said.

She said her didn’t believe it when she got the TV presenting job.

Tebogo Maunatlala maintains that she is still the same girl from Tembisa and the limelight has not change her a bit.

“I want to start an organisation that is going to focus on Tembisa’s young girls and engage them in fighting poverty as women instead of opting for blessers,” she said.
