Led by acting chairperson, Godfrey Tsotetsi, the Gauteng Legislature’s (GPL) Portfolio Committee on Infrastructure Development conducted an oversight visit at Tlama Tlama Primary School in Tembisa on September 8.

Tlama Tlama Primary School is one of the projects which is being implemented by the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development.

The school is due to receive four new classrooms, a nutrition centre and guard house.

The department is also conducting upgrades to three classroom blocks and the administration block.

The portfolio committee visited the school as a result of the contractor having abandoned the project due to issues relating to late payment by the department.

The oversight visit was part of the committee’s Focus Intervention Study (FIS), titled, “Poor workmanship by contractors and late payment of contractors as factors to project delays”.

The FIS aims to provide the impetus and strategic direction for the committee’s oversight role, doing away with a reactive or ad-hoc approach, and presenting a more proactive approach.

The committee is responsible for conducting oversight on the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development and oversees the Department’s programmes, expenditures and implementation of policies.
