408 cupcakes closer to little cancer patient’s dream

Raffle tickets are also sold at R50 a ticket for Monya's beach dream

FONSO’S Bakery on Monument Road sold 408 cupcakes on Saturday to support a three-year-old cancer patient’s dream of going to the sea.

Little Monya van Wyk of Van Riebeeck Park was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in May. She is receiving intense chemotherapy through a tunnelled catheter which goes through her chest directly into her heart.

As part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer, Fonso’s decided to start its own initiative, Cupcakes for Monya, to raise money for her beach dream.

“My daughter told me about Monya’s story which she saw on Facebook. I decided to help them out by starting this project to help make her dream come true. We were astonished by how fast the word spread and how many people wanted to help,” said Charles Fonso, owner of Fonso’s Bakery.

The goal was to sell 200 cupcakes and it was surpassed by 9am. Another batch had to be baked to meet clients’ demand. They raised more than R3 000 for Monya’s beach dream.

“Every time Monya watches television and sees the beach she says that one day she wants to go there. We just want to thank Fonso’s and Talana Lopes for helping us make this a dream come true. We enjoyed it so much to be part of the cupcake project, especially Monya,” said mother Adel.

Adel had to quit her job shortly after Monya was diagnosed to give her 24-hour care. They now struggle with only one income and the costs that go with her treatment.

“Through this whole journey Monya has taken everything so well and still keeps on fighting through all the nausea, body pains and hair loss. There are so many children with cancer and we want everyone out there to be aware of the need to donate blood and most importantly, blood platelets, as well as bone marrow. These elements are life or death for a leukemia patient,” Adel added.

Talana Lopes from Mommas over Matters is selling raffle tickets at R50 a ticket to go towards Monya’s beach dream. Some great prizes are up for grabs such as two gym contracts valid for two years at BodyFlo, a salon voucher to the value of R800 at Serhairnity, a R700 voucher for framing or printing at The Artist and much more.
