Calling all photographers
The congress is open to anyone who is interested in photography, whether they have a camera or not
EDENVALE Photographic Club will host the 2016 Combined East Rand Photographic Societies Photographic Congress and Interclub Competition.
The event is due to take place at Edenvale Community Centre on Saturday, October 15, starting with registration at 8am.
“The congress is open to anyone who is interested in photography, whether they have a camera or not,” says club vice chairman, Dave Gordon. “The programme covers a wide range of subjects and talks by some of the top photographers in the country.”
The keynote speaker is Koot Marais, who has worked his way up from a “kid with a Kodak” to a highly accomplished and acknowledged photographer. Among his many achievements he won the Photographic Society of Southern Africa’s Impala Trophy for three consecutive years, from 2012 to 2014.
“Even though my photography is a lot more serious than a hobby, I make my living as a traffic engineer,” says Marais. “My work and photography take up most of my time but I still try to find time for my other interests, namely oil painting and parrot breeding.”
The other speakers are Johan Botha (wildlife photography), Rob Aspeling (studio photography), Shem Compion (chasing new images in this digital world – mainly wildlife and especially birds) and Neil Viljoen (astrophotography – something completely different without breaking the bank).
In addition to the formal presentations there will be three different studio set-ups complete with lights, backdrops and live models where professional and aspiring photographers will be able to practise their skills at portrait, Cosplay and close-up photography at just R65 per 10-minute shoot. Advance booking for these shoots is essential.
Bronze medals will be awarded to winning clubs in both senior and junior categories and their entries will be showcased.
The cost for the congress is R60 a person, which covers the full day’s programme and includes a light lunch. For more information, contact Gordon on 083-247-7646 or 060-453-8181.
