Sudden death of CPF chairman shocks Edleen community

Viljoen was found lying on the bathroom floor, with his head and shoulders against the door

THE chairman of Edleen CPF, Chris Viljoen (65), collapsed and died in his home on Tuesday afternoon where he stayed with his life partner, Elmarie Lamprecht (65).

Viljoen collapsed in the bathroom of his home in Oklahoma Gardens in Edleen, after complaining of a pain in his leg the entire morning.

The cause of death is still unknown but according to his elder brother, Philip Viljoen (69), the family suspects it was either a heart attack or possible thrombosis.

“The post death examination will be done by Dr Hennie Smit, who was his personal doctor for the past 30 years. The family would like to thank him for his service rendered to Chris,” said Philip.

Chris would have turned 66 in December. He had no children.

Philip said his brother had complained he did not feel well after waking up on Tuesday morning with a pain in his leg.

“He declined a cup of coffee and went back to bed. He fell asleep again for about two to three hours. After waking up again, he said the pain was more severe and asked Elmarie to go to the chemist to buy pain medicine,” Philip  explained.

Lamprecht returned with the medication, which Chris took and went back to bed. After relaxing for some time, he went to the bathroom.

“This was where he collapsed. He was found by Elmarie lying on the bathroom floor with his head and shoulders against the door, which made it difficult for her gain entry. She contacted one of her neighbours, Louis Steyn for assistance, who managed to push the door partially open to assist.

Chris was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

“He was well known in Kempton Park. After completing his schooling at Hoërskool Kempton Park, he joined SAA where he retired as a cargo export manager in 2007,” his brother said.

He was chairman of Edleen CPF from July 2012 and was also chairman of the body corporate for Oklahoma Gardens where he lived since the late seventies.

He is said to have contributed a lot of energy and time to ensuring the correct running and implementation of procedures.

“He will be remembered as a fun loving person, totally dedicated to whatever he got involved in, as well as an animal lover of note. In recent years two cats and two dogs became part of the family. One cat is still alive at the ripe age of 19 years.

“We will miss him and his presence dearly as a family member and beloved brother.”

Edleen CPF management and members said: “We salute you Chris, you will be sorely missed. Our deepest condolences go to Elmarie and your family.”

Edleen CPF is also grateful to Chris for the instrumental role he played in the formation of the new Edleen CPF during the change-over when the suburb was removed from falling under Sebenza SAPS and added to Norkem Park SAPS.
