AfriForum to spend R2-million on roads

AfriForum launches month of self-reliance

AfriForum launched its Month of Self-reliance campaign at Laerskool Edleen on Monday.

The project will see R2-million being spent on municipal road infrastructure, including road repairs and upgrades, in towns where there are active AfriForum branches.

According to Hein Gonzales, AfriForum’s project spokesperson, the campaign will include erecting stop signs where these signs were stolen or run over, while unsafe crossings, speed humps and pedestrian crossings will be painted.

“We will also install reflectors at unsafe crossings,” said Gonzales.

The campaign follows after the civil rights organisation completed a safety audit of municipal roads in September. The audit revealed that certain roads did not adhere to the minimum requirements as set out in applicable legislation.

“Communities have the power to hold government accountable where these responsibilities are not met. When communities stand together, real changes can be made,” said Gonzales.

“A lack of political power does not mean that we are powerless. We are still able to take on successful self-do projects,” said Kallie Kriel, the CEO of AfriForum.
